ABOUT WILLIAM CROSS, FSA SCOT
BRITISH WRITER
William Cross, FSA Scot is a writer and researcher whose speciality is biography. He is the author of a number of books on British Society figures, including Almina, 5th Countess of Carnarvon, (1876-1969), George Edward Stanhope Molyneux Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon ( of Tutankhamun fame ), the Honourable Gwyneth Ericka Morgan (1895-1924) and the Honourable Evan Frederic Morgan, ( 1893-1949), the last Viscount Tredegar, the last two mentioned being members of the Morgan family of Tredegar House, Newport, Gwent.
Cross has also written long biographical sketches of the American,
Catherine Wendell ( 1900-1977) and the Austrian dancer, Tilly Losch
(1904-1975), the two wives of Henry George Alfred Marius Victor Francis Herbert
( 1898-1987), 6th Earl of Carnarvon. In
addition Cross has written two books on Prince Victor Duleep Singh (
1866-1918), the eldest son the last Maharajah of
Among the books from
Cross in 2012 was "The Dustbin Case: Dennistoun v Dennistoun", a
transcript of the scandal ridden divorce in the High Court case involving
Dorothy Denniston an her ex husband Lt. Col Ian Onslow Dennistoun who later
married Almina, 5th Countess of Carnarvon. 17 days of mud slinging and sexual
excess, the case was described as like "two cats (Dorothy and Almina)
fighting in the gutter".
In 2014 Cross added a
compilation on the dancer Tilly Losch and a short book on the Honourable Lois
Ina Sturt, ( 1900-1937) the first wife of Evan Frederic Morgan, Viscount
Tredegar. Cross has added a further volume culling from the engagement diaries
of Honourable Lois Ina Sturt, a second volume will be produced in due course.
Cross published two
other books in 2014, including "Evan Frederic Morgan : Viscount
Tredegar : Final Affairs : Financial and Carnal" and the controversial
book "The Abergavenny Witch Hunt " a retrospective on the arrest and criminal
trials of a group of over 20 homosexual men in the Welsh town of Abergavenny,
in 1942.
In 2015 Cross
published a book with a selection of letters and prose by the Honourable Evan
Morgan covering the period 1917-1929, this was followed in 2016 with a second
volume of Evan's further letters and prose and newspaper articles.
In 2016 Cross added a book revisiting the story of the discovery of Tutankhamun and it's leading personalities, entitled
" Carnarvon, Carter and Tutankhamun
Revisited : the Hidden Truths and Doomed Relationships". This book
was revised in 2019 to mark the 80th anniversary of the death of Howard Carter
in 1939. A further revision followed in 2022 to mark the centenary of the
discovery of Tutankhamun's Tomb in 1922.
In 2017 Cross
published another title on Evan Morgan " Sketches of Evan, Viscount
Tredegar 'Lord of the Lies' " In 2020 a follow up title " More
Sketches of Evan, Viscount Tredegar 'Lord of the Lies' was added.
Also in 2019 Cross
published a book " Prince Victor Duleep Singh & the Curse of the
Carnarvons" about the controversial relationship between Prince Victor
Duleep Singh, son of the last Maharajah of Lahore and Lord Carnarvon, 5th Earl,
of Tutankhamun fame. The book deals with the paternity issue of Henry, the 6th
Earl of Carnarvon.
Between 2018 and 2019
Cross published a book on the Myths associated with the Morgan family of
Tredegar House - to address the lies and fake news poured out over the years
and a book on Evan Morgan's notorious House Parties and frolics when he was
Viscount Tredegar between 1934 and 1949.
Cross' other books
(2018) include a collection of the explicit verse of Lois Sturt ( sometime
Viscountess Tredegar) written with her lover Reggie Pembroke ( 15th Earl of
Pembroke) during their long love affair from 1919-1926 and a book that
celebrates and pays tribute to the five great grandsons of the first Lord and
Lady Tredegar who were killed in the Great War.
In 2020 Cross
published "Footprints on the Sands of Time. A glance at Welsh born
photographer Angus McBean."
Cross regularly post
TWEETS on Twitter as a tribute to Angus McBean, Evan Morgan, Tilly Losch,
Ronald Firbank, Alminia, Countess of Carnarvon and others featured in his
books.
Cross has an active
interest (for the purpose of compiling new biographical sketches ) on John
Rowland Fothergill, (1876-1957) the Innkeeper, chef, food and wine connoisseur,
author, artist, bully and wit, and on Rosemary and Alistair Leveson-Gower
(Viscountess Ednam), the offspring of the magnificent Meddling Millie, 4th
Duchess of Sutherland. He is also working on new titles on the Carnarvons of
In 2021 Cross
published a book entitled " Beechwood : A Story of Childhood"
about his early years (1950s/60s) growing up in a coal mining village in
Other books of
reminiscence are planned in a series of at least 16 volumes entitled
"Going Backwards: A Collection of Exhumations & Things Past".
These books are intended for Legal Deposit Only and comprise material to
supplement the various published and unpublished books and personal contacts of
William Cross during his lifetime.
Also in 2021 Cross
published a book of fiction ( or is it?) being stories written in lockdown
about two darn cats, Phoebe and Mags Worthington, of The Mews, Belgravia and
their guardians, Dame Katrina Ogilvy (an Opera Singer) and a mysterious Cook
called "Olga". The adventure stories are set in 1947-8. A second book
of these stories was published in December 2022.
During the COVID 19 lockdown Cross produced
and published a book entitled "The Moles of Intriguer House, Bassaleg
Fields" a parody on the Morgans of Tredegar House.
In 2022 Cross published a book entitled "More on
Prince Victor Duleep Singh & the Curse of the Carnarvons: The Final
Twists" revealing a reassessment of the relationship between Prince Victor
Duleep Singh and George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon.
Cross also published
in 2022 his contribution to the Tutankhamun Centenary in a controversial book
entitled “ Lies, Damned Lies and the
Carnarvons”
In 2023 Cross intends
to publish a book "Highclere
Insider-David Sox: The Man Who Knew Too Much". This appraises the
reliability of information, apparently discovered in Highclere Archives by the early Highclere Guide, the late David Sox, citing Prince Victor Duleep Singh as prime
suspect for the father of the 6th Earl of Carnarvon.
